How Three Weeks of Study Abroad at Oxford University Pack a Punch
University of Melbourne student Cindy L.鈥攁 double major in linguistics and psychology鈥攔eflected on her summer experience at one the world鈥檚 most prestigious universities:
A powerful way to learn
The Oxford teaching method鈥攚hich involves lectures, seminars, tutorials, and much reading鈥 really invigorated me to think deeply and critically, especially since I鈥檇 chosen a course outside of my major. Frequent class discussions and a condensed assignment schedule highlighted the value of collaborative learning. It also showed me how much progress I could achieve on an entirely new topic within three weeks!
Highlights included the many museum visits and other exhibits provided in the program. At Oxford, the Ashmolean Museum holds a fantastic collection from Greek antiquities to modern art. The Pitt Rivers, Natural History, and History of Science museums were equally spectacular and informative, and especially fun to attend with friends.
Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) day trips and master classes also gave us ample opportunity to explore historic locations like Shakespeare鈥檚 home and interact with special artifacts, including 13th century manuscripts at Brasenose College.
Living on campus
Residential life at LMH was incredibly stress-free and enriching, with classes conveniently on site and the University Parks just beyond the lawns. I was fortunate to live just across from the library, where I did most of my studying鈥攁nd looking for the cat-in-residence. One flight of stairs away, there was a set of old pianos where I鈥檇 unwind after every completed assignment.
Outside, the lawns made for wonderful social evenings and activities that were great for meeting people outside our respective courses. Sharing meals in the Deneke Dining Hall was also a highlight鈥攈uge kudos to the catering staff!聽聽
Joining a rich, diverse community
I savored the city itself and the rhythm of intensive study, but what I鈥檒l miss most is definitely the people. It was amazing how quickly everyone bonded and looking back, it’s hard to believe we only met three weeks ago.
My peers, my educators and those beyond the college brought perspectives from many walks of life; the excitement and enrichment in this community was unparalleled. Whether it鈥檚 a friendly debate, shared walks in town or even brief bonding over a wish for more AC (sorry, Europe), these moments have been so special.
Broadening my experience with 91制片厂 activities
Seeing Shakespeare鈥檚 A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Regent鈥檚 Park Open Air Theatre in London was undoubtedly my favorite 91制片厂-included experience. By seeing a London production for the first time, I could better understand the Shakespeare tradition as a 鈥渓ineage鈥 closer to home.
This excursion also gave me a chance to visit London. Walking through the streets and park, I witnessed how locals went about their day-to-day lives, how they spent time with loved ones, and how theatre brought these aspects together.
